Meet Shayla
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with twenty years of experience working with adults struggling with various life challenges including depression or other mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship issues, family of origin dynamics, and alcohol/substance misuse. My approach is relational, holistic, empathic, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed and is based on psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, and attachment theories, although at times, I utilize other modalities including CBT and Mindfulness practices in sessions.
I believe the therapeutic relationship is the most important component to therapeutic success and plays a crucial role in fostering change. This relationship can serve as a corrective experience from earlier foundational experiences, relationships, or interactions, so my approach is always based on our connection. I care deeply about the individuals I work with and work collaboratively with them to identify the ways in which their own life experiences influence their adult lives. We work toward understanding the root causes of behaviors, symptoms, and reactions that keep them stuck or hinder their relationships with themselves and others.
My intention is to support and empower my patients and create a safe, non-judgmental space, while assisting them in discovering a deeper understanding of themselves, cope effectively with life’s stressors, navigate healthy relationships, and work on improving their self-esteem. By helping them to examine their insecurities, doubts, and fears, we work toward a greater sense of self-awareness and acceptance and a more positive self-regard, in order to live a richer and more meaningful life.
I am licensed to practice in New York so patients must live in NY.
I completed the Two-Year Psychodynamic program and the Four-Year Psychoanalytic Program at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy.
